Subaru Recall: 5,379 2013 Outback, Legacy Models Affected Due to Steering Column Issue

Subaru is recalling a select number of its 2013 Outback and Legacy models for steering issues.

The automotive company said this week that thought it fixed problems with the outer and inner shafts of the steering column in 2012 according to ABC News.

The company has received at least two complaints claiming their steering "failed" while driving their vehicle.

Approximately 5,739 Outback and Legacy models were affected in the recall according to MSN Autos.

The recalled vehicles were produced from February 2012 through June 2012. The issue was first discovered last June in vehicles waiting to be shipped but Subaru thought they had fixed the issue before sending the models to dealerships.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that if the upper and lower parts of the steering shaft lose contact, then the driver could lose "the ability to steer the vehicle," which would increase the chance of a crash according to USA Today.

Subaru has already started notifying dealers and began to send letters out to owners last week.

All customers will be notified in 30 days according to Subaru.

Dealerships will be instructed to replace the steering column assembly with a new one, free of charge according to ABC News.
