Tesla Motors Inc announced today, June 19, it is recalling 1,228 of its 2013 Model S cars produced between May 10 and June 8 due to a defect in the mounting bracket of the rear seat.
The recall tarnishes what was a previously clean public record for the Model S.
The vehicle received a score of 99 out of 100 from Consumer Reports magazine earlier this year.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in the event of a crash, if the seat becomes "unmoored," there is a good chance a passenger could be seriously hurt according to the NHTSA website.
"This reduces our confidence that the left hand seat back will be properly retained in the event of a crash," Tesla founder and Chief Executive Elon Musk said in a statement posted on the Tesla website.
Musk said there have been "no customer complaints" and that the company was not aware of any injuries because of the defect.
Musk added that the recall was not in response to any regulatory warning.
Tesla said in its filing with the NHTSA that it suspected that nearly 20 percent of the 1,228 vehicles have welds that may not hold if a crash were to occur.
A worker at the Tesla's California assembly line claimed to have noticed the defect and reported it to managers before the cars were shipped out, Tesla said to the NHTSA.
Tesla shares, which have tripled in the past six months, decreased 1.1 percent to $102.28 this week.
The company has announced a number of different plans it hopes to accomplish in the near future like introducing a small crossover sedan and creating more charging stations for Tesla vehicles around North America.
Musk is set to demonstrate the company's battery swap technology tomorrow, June 20.
