It's time. Apple is bringing innovation to cars. After keeping mum about the subject, the Cupertino-based company has been revealed to have been granted a permit to test self-driving cars in California, marking the start of Apple's gamble in the automobile industry.

Although Apple is yet to officially announce its new venture towards autonomous vehicles, the California Department of Motor Vehicles' website confirms that the tech giant is indeed expanding its horizons. From computing and mobile technology, the company is moving on to self-driving cars.

"The permit covers three vehicles, all 2015 Lexus RX450h, and six drivers," DMV verified. These three vehicles will be joining Google, Tesla, and other automakers on the streets of California.

It is unknown when these cars will roll out, but reports are positive that the community will spot them driving around soon. The DMV listing hints that the company is past the initial stages of development and there could already be products that are ready for testing.

CEO Tim Cook did say in October 2016 that the automobile industry has a lot of technologies that Apple can look into. The same year, the company also expressed its interest in the transportation business. So what can consumers expect from Apple's newest endeavor?

As of now, it is hard to tell what kind of innovations that Apple will bring to the industry. Although the tech is fairly new, many other brands have already stepped into the self-driving cars scene. Thus, many are looking forward to what the smartphone maker can bring to the table that has not been thought of before.

Apple joining the development of self-driving tech could mean good things for the automobile community. A product by the tech giant could revolutionize cars as what the iPhone and Macbook have done to their respective industries.
