Ford Motor Co. announced they'll be recalling approximately 7,150 new models in North America to fix issues with the rear door lock that could have a "faulty child safety mechanism" according to the Associated Press.
"The child lock may not engage when the operator uses normal turning force to activate the child lock and the operator may incorrectly believe the child lock is engaged," wrote Kelli Felker, a Ford spokeswoman, in an e-mailed message to Edmunds.
The models involved in the recall include 2013 C-Max, Escape and Ford Focus vehicles in the U.S. and Canada due to a child lock on the left rear door that was most likely installed incorrectly. This marks the fifth recall for the new Escape model since 2012 according to Reuters.
The company stated they'll be investigating approximately 5,638 Escapes that were produced in Louisville Assembly Plant between Nov. 14 and 24 said to Felker, according to Reuters.
Ford will be recalling 1,223 Focus vehicles and 283 C-Max vehicles as well. Both vehicles were built at Michigan Assembly Plant between Nov. 17 and 21.
Ford stated this week that in some of the vehicles being recalled, the child lock on the left rear door doesn't work at all when activated by the driver. In other circumstances, the driver may think that the locks are working properly when they aren't.
Around 5,650 vehicles included in the recall are from the U.S. according to Felker. No accidents or injuries have been reported as of yet due to the issue.
Ford has had to recall the 2013 Escape twice for issues with its 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. They've also issued two recalls on the same vehicle back in the summer for braking and carpeting issues.
All owners of the three vehicles can expect to receive letters in the mail around March 25. Ford dealers will replace and fix the issue on the left rear door according to Reuters.
