"Game of Thrones" Season 8, the final season of the highly acclaimed series, will be the shortest season by far. Showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff recently confirmed that indeed there will only be six episodes for the final season, 4 short of the usual 10. Plus, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran will guest star in the series as a special surprise for Maisie Williams.

Speaking at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, both showrunners pointed out that the outline for the 8th season is 140 pages long and they are splitting it up with the other writers, Dave Hill and Bryan Cogman. "Game of Thrones" Season 8 is one episode short of Season 7, which is slated to debut on July 6.

Benioff also added, according to Entertainment Weekly, that they in fact wanted to do a 70-hour movie. "It will turn out to be a 73-hour movie, but it's stayed relatively the same of having the beginning, middle and now we're coming to the end. It would have been really tough if we lost any core cast members along the way, I'm very happy we've kept everyone and we get to finish it the way we want to," said Benioff.

Also present during the SXSW are Maisie Williams who gave life to Arya Stark and Sophie Turner who plays Sansa Stark. Both teased fans a big secret, which is somewhat not so secret anymore.

Ed Sheeran, singer-songwriter, has been confirmed to be featured in "Game of Thrones" Season 7. Vanity Fair reports the deeper why as to the appearance of the British megastar on the hit fantasy series.

Benioff admitted that they have been trying for years to land Ed Sheeran to be on the show as a surprise for Maisie Williams who is a huge fan. "This is the year we finally did it." Although "Game of Thrones" is already notorious for featuring musical stars, but they often go under the radar.

This will be an exciting season as a British megastar will be in the series and "The Great War" is about to happen on "Game of Thrones." Season 7 debuts on July 16. Don't forget to check out the trailer below feature the different sigils of the powerful houses of the Seven Kingdoms.
