The top finalists for the World Car of the Year, World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year awards were announced this week at a press conference hosted by Bridgestone Corp. and The New York international Auto Show at the Geneva International Motor Show.
The winners for each category will be announced on March 28 at the New York International Auto Show.
Word Car of the Year Nominees:
-Mercedes-Benz A-Class
-Porsche Boxster / Cayman
-Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 / GT 86 (combined entry)
-Volkswagen Golf.
To be eligible for the overall Word car award, each candidate must become available for sale on two continents or more between Jan. 1, 2012 and May 30, 2013.
"In the voting for this year's WCOTY award, we saw a very closely fought race which resulted in not three, but four finalists!" said World Car Awards co-chair, Peter Lyon according to the press release.
Each vehicle was selected and voted on by the international jury panel comprised of 66 automotive journalists from 23 different countries. Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on account of his or her "expertise, credibility, influence, and experience."
World Performance Car Nominees:
-Ferrari F12 Berlinetta
-Porsche Boxster / Cayman
-Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 / GT 86 (combined entry)
This is the seventh out of eight times that Porsche has earned a top three position, and the Porsche 911 won took home the WPC award last year. The Ferrari 458 won the 2011 award according to the press release.
World Green Car Nominees:
-Renault Zoe
-Tesla Model S
-Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid

World Car Design of the Year Nominees:
-Aston Martin Vanquish
-Jaguar F-Type
-Mazda6
A design panel of five respected world design experts was asked to review each of the candidates and then make a short-list of recommendations for jurors. The design experts were: Masatsugu Arimoto from Japan, Silvia Baruffaldi of Italy, Gernot Bracht of Germany, Sam Livingstone from the U.K, and Tom Matano from the U.S.
