The 65-year-old woman was killed after a wave hit her and her companion, a 70-year-old man on a beach as they were returning to their hotel. The two were swept out to sea and later rescued by a Navy officer, but by then the woman was already declared brain dead.

The man is still listed in serious condition as of March 6 according to the Associated Press.

This is the second incident where someone was killed due to a powerful wave in the last five months. Back in December, two fishermen were pulled into the San Francisco Bay by a wave, and both were later found dead according to Yahoo.

Authorities have yet to name the tourist killed by the wave, but the woman had a driver's license from Wisconsin. The man was said to have a driver's license from Nebraska, but it is not clear yet whether or not family members have been notified.

A number of beaches are known for their large waves, but according to the book "100 Best Surf Spots in The World," Cabo's waves are known to be gentle, and easy to ride waves compared to other locations where big waves are dangerous.

"At the other end of the scale is the big surf of Cabo San Lucas at Todos Santos, where the wave can turn into huge gun barrels, glistening steel in the noonday sun and striking awe into the township that overlooks the bay," the book states according to the Inquisitir. "When a mighty swell hits, the big-wave riders get out their guns and face the pounding shorebreak eye to eye. It's a shoot-out with some of the most powerful waves in the world."

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico stated that they had no new information to provide and where working with local authorities, according to the Associated Press.
