2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Reveals How It Protects Drivetrain, Removes “Wheel Hop,” & Plants Driver In Place

The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon recently released its latest teaser entitled "Race-Hardened Parts," which basically explains how it protects its driveline from stresses brought upon by bringing immensely absurd power to the ground. This is the 8th teaser Dodge has released and there are a few more on the way, as the 2017 New York Auto Show draws nearer.

Dodge took into account every single detail in creating the perfect drag-strip Demon. To ensure that the car's drivetrain survives the strain over time and can handle an even increased load, Dodge provided necessary upgrades that the Hellcat lacked.

A solution was developed to prevent the dreaded "wheel hop" from ruining a perfectly good run. A wheel hop tends to happen to high-powered cars wherein tires quickly slip and regain traction at launch, thus spiking the torque in the drivetrain.

So, the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon's new launch control system uses the wheel speed sensors to detect slipping, which is the first for Dodge's production cars. If by any chance a slip is detected, then the car's control module will automatically, and momentarily, reduce engine torque in order to maximize traction, according to CNET. This happens without the driver needing to lift.

So, based on the teaser, the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon received an upgraded differential housing thanks to the use of a heat-treated A383 aluminum alloy and a higher-strength gear set material. This increased torque capacity by 30 percent. Also, the gear set has been shot-peened to increase durability and reduce residual stresses.

A 20% increase in high-strength steel, 20% thicker tube, and heated stub-shafts upgraded the Demon's prop shaft. This overall leads to an increase in torque capacity by 15 percent.

Lastly, the upgraded 41-spline half shafts now deliver 20% increased torque capacity thanks to the use of high-strength low alloy steel and 8-ball joints. This improves the torque capacity while reducing operating temperatures by more than 86 degrees Fahrenheit, reports Jalopnik.

Now, given all the upgrades and improvements, a four-point harness bar can be installed of removed without cutting or drilling into the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon's frame. This is possible because the back seat has been removed. And the harness will keep the driver in place, safely. Plus, there's a Demon logo on the harness too.

With only a few weeks away from its unveiling, we can barely contain our excitement as Dodge has been teasing us via installment basis on how the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon will be. But one thing we have been dying to find out is its engine and how much horses it can produce. Stay tuned again for more updates on the latest teaser for the Demon.
