Two Chevrolet cars were hailed as the top in their respective class in this year's list of Consumer Reports Annual Top Picks. The Chevrolet Cruze topped the compact car category, while the Chevrolet Impala aced the large sedan category for the third year in a row.

The Chevrolet Cruze dominated its category. The compact car topped equally popular cars like the Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, and the Honda Civic, all three of which have dominated the category in the past.

In a statement acquired by Detroit News, Consumer Report director of automotive testing Jake Fisher said, "The best way to describe (the Cruze) is they took the Impala and they shrunk it down and have many of the same virtues in a smaller package."

Fisher also pointed out the Chevrolet Cruze's ride comfort and fuel economy, as well as the technological leap when it comes to the car's infotainment system. Consumer Report praised both the sedan and hatchback models of the 2017 Chevy Cruze.

The tried-and-tested Chevy Impala is once again on top of the chart, for the third straight year. The 2017 Impala was praised for its roomy interior and large trunk room. The car was also commended for its comfort and agile handling, according to the official Consumer Report website.

For the subcompact car, the Toyota Yaris iA took home the prize. The Toyota Prius won the compact hybrid category, while the Audi Q7 was chosen as the best luxury SUV. In the sports car category, the Mazda MX-5 Miata emerged on top and the Subaru Forester was hailed the king of the small SUV category.

The Toyota Highlander was picked as the best-midsized SUV, while the Honda Ridgeline was picked as the best compact pickup truck. Lastly, the Kia Optima won the midsized sedan category.

The Chevrolet Cruze dethroned the Subaru Impreza, which was the category's winner last year. Aside from the nod from Consumer Reports, the Cruze is also well reviewed by several motoring experts.
