A production model of the new Volkswagen XL1 plug-in hybrid will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month, and production will begin for the two-seater by the end of 2013 according to a company press release.

The XL1 was hand-built at the XL1 plant in Osnabruk, Germany, which also builds vehicles like the VW Golf convertible and the Porsche Boxster.

The car will weight approximately 1,752 lbs., which is around half of a normal midsize sedan.

The vehicle's power comes from a two-cylinder, 0.8-liter diesel and is linked to a 7-speed transmission, an electric motor and a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery according to Volkswagen.

Volkswagen revealed that the XL1 will be able to travel 31 miles on electric power alone, and 310 miles on one a tank of gas, which would equal a 260 mpg rating. This would make it more fuel-efficient than any other diesel, gas, or electric car in the world.

In comparison, the Scion iQ electric model can go 38 miles on a full charge according to Yahoo.

Don't expect the vehicle to be fast however, as the electric motor and engine combine to produce 68 hp and 103 lb.-ft. of torque according to Volkswagen. This would mean the new XL can go from 0 to 62 in approximately 12.7 seconds, and the overall top speed is 99 mph.

The XL1 is 153.1 inches long, 65.6 in wide, and 45.4 in tall. By comparison, a Volkswagen Polo is 156.3 in. long, 66.2 in. wide, and 57.6 in. tall, making it slightly larger than the XL1

The vehicle has been certified for sale in Europe, but Volkswagen has yet to announce if the car will be sold in the U.S.
