This might sound like a beginning of a science fiction film, but a Netherlands-based automotive company has recently released the world's first-ever commercial flying car. Dubbed simply as PAL-V Liberty, the flying car has a soaring price tag of $400,000.

With that price tag, one can purchase a brand-new luxurious Rolls-Royce Dawn, the only disadvantage is that it does not fly. As of this writing, the PAL-V Liberty is available for pre-orders. PAL-V claims that the company should be able to start deliveries by the end of 2018.

Interested buyers are not required to pay the full price up front. PAL-V only requires a non-refundable deposit of $25,000 for the Pioneer edition and $10,000 for the standard model, according to Value Walk.

The PAL-V Liberty's looks are rather unconventional. It is a three-wheeled car which sports a retractable rotor on its top. The design makes the car look like a gyrocopter. The first 90 models of the PAL-V Liberty will carry the Pioneer Edition tag, these models sport a specially designed interior and exterior details.

The PAL-V Liberty Pioneer Edition costs $599,000. For this price, buyers will get additional features like electronic flight instrument display instead of the conventional electromechanical option, power heating, as well as a handful of fancy and luxurious details and finishes on the interior.

In a statement acquired by Motor Trend, PAL-V said, "PAL-V deliberately chose to engineer, design and build a flying car with proven technologies and fully compliant with existing regulations. This leads to a first product delivery date that is realistic and imminent."

Buyers of the PAL-V Liberty are properly vetted before they are allowed to place a purchase. Buyers are required to have a license for both driving and flying. While on the road, the PAL-V Liberty has a listed top speed of 100mph and can accelerate from zero to 62mph in less than 9 seconds. While flying, the Liberty can travel at speeds of up to 112mph.
