U.K. doctors decided to keep a baby boy "frozen" for four days in order to slow down his heart rate according to ABC News.

The baby's heart was beating more than 300 beats per minute, so doctors decided to try a groundbreaking, yet risky technique.

By sedating the baby, wrapping him in a blanket filled with cooling gel, the child's body temperature lowered to approximately 91 degrees according to the report.

Doctors warned the parents of baby Edward Ives that there was only a five percent survival rate, since he was born with supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and was delivered after only 35 weeks at the University College London Hospital according to ABC.

"I just thought he was going to die," said Claire Ives according to Yahoo.

On the fourth day, the baby's heart rate returned to normal, and doctors slowly warmed him back to a normal 98.6 degrees.

"All I wanted to do was scoop him up and give him a warm cuddle. I just had to keep reminding myself that it was saving his life," Edward's mother, Claire, said to Metro.Co.Uk.

Now a healthy six-month old, it is unlikely Edward will need further hospitalizations, although he is being closely monitored to see if the irregular heartbeat does return according to ABC.

"It's made me appreciate all the small things about my children," said Claire Ives to ABC, who is planning on running a half-marathon to raise awareness about neonatal SVT. "It's the best thing ever to bring him home."
