Apple Cuts Prices For MacBook Pro Laptop By Up To $200, Updates Processors After Disappointing Holiday Sales (VIDEO)

Apple announced this week that they will be cutting the price of the base version of their MacBook Pro laptop with retina display by approximately $200 according to Reuters. The company is hoping to revamp their top-end laptops after a reported steep decline in Mac sales during the holidays.

Investors have been worried that the iPad would affect sales for the MacBook, but company CEO Tim Cook stated this week that he's not concerned despite the low holiday numbers.

Apple sold approximately 4.1 million Macs in December, which is down 21 percent from 2011 according to a company press statement.

"What's inescapable is that this first version of the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro isn't a winner when it comes to price and performance," said Mashable senior tech analyst Christina Warren. "It's just a bit too expensive."

The company also missed Wall Street's revenue forecast for the third quarter in a row in January after iPhone sales were below expectations. The low iPhone sales also have investors worried if their dominance of consumer electronics might be "slipping."

Apple shares are down 0.6 percent at $465 in early trading reports on Nasdaq.com.

"They've got slow growth in PC sales like everyone, and lower prices help," said Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, who also cited efficiencies in Retina screen production and processor price cuts as likely contributors to Apple's decision.

Apple stated this week that the MacBook will now be priced at $1,499 and also introduced a 2.6 gigahertz processor, 256 gigabytes flash memory option for $1,699 according to Apple.

Their 15-inch MacBook Pro has also been upgraded with a faster 2.4 gigahertz quad-core processor and the top-end 15-inch notebook with a new 2.7 gigahertz quad-core processor and 16GB of memory according to Reuters.
