An asteroid passing earth this week would be worth approximately $195 billion, if only scientists could figure out a way to catch it according to The Inquisitr.
NASA stated that asteroid 2012 DA14, which will be passing earth today, Feb. 13, will travel closer to earth than some TV communication satellites. The spacerock is approximately the size of a football field according to Space.com.
Despite the asteroid passing only 17,000 feet away from earth, NASA experts have stated we are at no risk of the asteroid hitting, causing life threatening damage to earth.
"Although they wouldn't (cause) a global catastrophe if they impact the Earth, they still do a lot of regional destruction," said Lindley Johnson, who oversees the Near-Earth Object Observations Program at NASA headquarters in Washington DC.
While this is good news, scientists do wish that there was some way they could catch the spacerock as it passes earth to sell it for approximately $195 billion worth of propellant and metals according to a report by Network World who stated Deep Space Industries, a private company that wants to mine asteroids.

"The flyby creates a unique opportunity for researchers to observe and learn more about asteroids," NASA officials said in a press statement this week.
Asteroid DA14 is the largest object to pass earth since sky surveys began in 1990 according to NASA officials. An asteroid the size of DA14 will only pass earth once every 40 years or so.
Only once every 1,200 years does an asteroid the size of DA14 actually hit earth according to Space.com.
