Country singer Emmylou Harris has formally been charged with hit-and-run after a collision on a California freeway in Oct. 2012.

Harris is accused of hitting another car with her rental vehicle while driving down the 405 according to a report by TMZ. California police launched an investigation into the incident and concluded this week that Harris should be charged with a misdemeanor offense.

A police report shows that Harris "slammed into" another car before leaving the scene. Harris claims she kept on driving because she was unaware she even hit another vehicle.

"The driver of any motor vehicle that has been involved in an accident or collision, regardless of the level of seriousness or extent of injury, must stop, find the owner of the damaged property and produce his or her driver documentation," according to California State Law.

If found guilty, the singer could face up to six months of jail time according to CMT.

Harris's last album, "Hard Bargain," was released in 2011 as a tribute to country music legend Gram Parsons. Parsons discovered Harris in Washington, D.C. in 1971 and invited her to sing on his 1973 album "GP" according to NME.com.

Parsons died the same year due to a drug overdose. Harris wrote a song about losing Parsons and their relationship together.

"It's terrible that Gram died so young, but I'm grateful that our paths crossed," Harris said about the song according to NME.com. "It's a thank you to him and kind of a tip of the hat to the universe to say 'I'm still here and I was given all these wonderful things because of that meeting with this person.' It's just a reflection."
