Two people were rescued this past weekend after their single-engine plane crashed and sank into the Hudson River near Yonkers according to CBS.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The Piper PA-32 plane was carrying a couple on a sightseeing trip from Trenton-Robbinsville Airport in Robbinsville, N.J. and crashed around 5:20 p.m. on Jan. 27. Yonkers Police Lt. Phil Collins stated the two were lucky they were wearing life vests, which enabled them to get out of the plane before it sank.

The two were pulled out to safety thanks to an off-duty Yonkers police detective and his 12-year-old son, who used a boat from the Hudson River Pilot House according to ABC News.

"They were drifting pretty quick," rescuer Danny Higgins said according to ABC News. "And if we didn't get out there quick enough, well, let's just say we're glad to get there quick.

Police have yet to release the names of the two people who almost froze to death after the plane crashed.

Both individuals were pulled from the Hudson River around 20 minutes after the plane crashed. They were then transported to Jacobi Medical Center where they were treated for hypothermia and listed in stable condition according to Toni Scherer of Empress Ambulance Service.

"The lady was mumbling some stuff, I don't know what she was mumbling about," Danny Higgins, Jr., said to ABC News. "They were both very stiff. They were numb, very cold."

Higgins stated the couple went into shock after being stuck in the freezing water for over 20 minutes. If they were in there another 10, the police detective predicted they would have most likely died.

The aircraft was registered to Dominick Lipariti, of Manalapan, N.J. according to FAA records. A man who answered the telephone at Lipariti's home stated to the Associated Press that it was his son's plane and it had been sold to another buyer.

He refused to tell the Associated Press who the most recent buyer was according to ABC News.
