Smartphone Sales Reach All-Time High Through AT&T, 10 Million Sold In 4th Quarter Alone

AT&T stated this week that they sold over 10 million smartphones during the fourth quarter of 2012.

The number is higher than any other quarter previously recorded, and should be attributed to the holiday season and the vast amount of Android, Apple and Windows smartphones now available.

The number tops the previous high of 9.4 million smartphones sold during the 2011 holiday season according to AT&T. The number of different cellphones options that AT&T provides seems endless, making it almost impossible to someone to not find a phone they like.

"We had another incredible quarter of smartphone sales as the mobile Internet continues to drive strong growth in wireless," said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T Mobility said in a press statement. "These are the industry's most valuable postpaid subscribers with average revenues twice that of non-smartphone subscribers.

During the fourth quarter, AT&T averaged approximately 110,000 smartphone sales a day according to Vega.

Overall, the company is expected to sell somewhere around 26.7 million phones for 2012, which would be a head of 2011's 26 million total. AT&T reportedly didn't experience a great third quarter as the company reported only 151,000 subscribers total, which wasn't even close to Verizon's 1.5 million according to a report by Slashgear.com.

Wells Fargo analyst Jennifer Fritzsche said there is a good chance AT&T could fail to meet her expectations for a wireless profit margin of 32.7 percent because of higher-than-expected smartphone sales according to Reuters.

AT&T is set to release its full fourth-quarter 2012 financial results after the market closes on Jan. 24.

Verizon meanwhile has also reported a "historic" fourth-quarter as well, at least according to CEO Lowell McAdam. He mentioned in a press statement this week that the company can confidently say 2.1 million subscribers were added in the fourth-quarter. Verizon will make their fourth-quarter numbers officially on Jan. 22.
