The father of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza claimed his body last week according to a report by CNN. Peter Lanza claimed the body on Dec. 27 so that a funeral could take place but declined to say where the body would be buried.

Adam Lanza made headlines this month when on Dec. 14 he took guns that belonged to his mother Nancy and shot her in her sleep. He then took his mother's car to Newton, Connecticut and killed 20 students and six staff members before taking his own life.

The shooting is being recognized as the second worse school shooting in U.S. history, slightly behind the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007.

The boy's father, Peter Lanza, and his brother Ryan were questioned by authorities on multiple occasions after the shooting.

"Our hearts go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones and to all those who were injured," said Peter Lanza on the shootings in a press statement. "We are in a state of disbelief and trying to find whatever answers we can. We, too, are asking why."

Adam Lanza reportedly didn't have a criminal record before the incident, but relatives told investigators that he had a slight form of autism according to CNN. They have not been able to confirm whether he was diagnosed with autism or Asperger's syndrome.

Scientists will now study Adam Lanza's DNA in a joint investigation by the state medical examiner's office according to a spokeswoman for the University of Connecticut Health Center.

The team hasn't commented on what they will be looking for in the DNA, but has said that the lab results and analysis could take weeks until they're able to determine anything.

A private funeral was held in New Hampshire for his mother Nancy Lanza according to the Associated Press. The report confirmed that Nancy was divorced from Peter Lanza when the shooting occurred and was living alone with Adam Lanza.
