Three New Jersey police officers were shot at their police station and one was taken into surgery for his wounds according to Reuters. The suspected gunman, who was brought to the Gloucester Township Police station for a domestic incident, was killed in the shootout.

"A violent struggle occurred while the suspect was being processed," Gloucester Deputy Police Chief David Harkins said, according to Philadelphia TV station NBC10. The man was able to grab a gun and then opened fire.

The gunman was killed in the police station during the encounter according to Gloucester Police Chief W. Harry Earle in a report by NBC10. Police have yet to reveal how he was able to get his hands on a weapon in the first place.

"The officers returned fire and the suspect is deceased at this time inside the police station," Harkins said to USA Today.

The three wounded officers, two men and a woman were brought to Cooper University Hospital around 6 a.m. according the hospital's spokeswoman Lori Shaffer. A press statement has yet to be issued by the Gloucester Township Police department.

Only one of three required surgery Shaffer stated, and two suffered minor wounds.

The incident comes only a week after a man was killed in a pistol shoot out in Pennsylvania and only two weeks after 26 people were killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

"Everybody was running up the side here," Sharon Lehner, a nurse who lives next door to the station, told the Courier-Post. "I saw a paramedic unit and an ambulance come down. I saw a lot of quick action in the ambulance with officers getting into the ambulance and then leaving."

Gloucester is located in central New Jersey, about 15 miles outside Philadelphia according to MapQuest.
