Last week it was reported that an unknown hacker would be releasing an untethered jailbreak for Apple devices like the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 on Dec. 22. While this would have been great news for most Apple users looking to free their phones, most decided to take the "I'll believe it when I see it" stance.
Turns out those people were right.
On Dec. 10, the developer that goes by the name Dream JB took to his site to address the naysayers.
"Proof will be posted both here and on my Twitter account on Wednesday," according to the Dream JB website. As far as the video that will be uploaded, it will be a single-take shot of the entire jailbreak process, including a restart and usage of the device to prove it is untethered. It will be uploaded as raw video straight from my camera to YouTube. So no edits of any form."
Dream JB then posted a video on YouTube a little before 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 12. The user stated that the video would be the first of two released outlining and explaining the supposed jailbreak for all recent Apple devices. Users watching the video, which reached over 550 comments before the video was deleted, quickly started responded by pointing out inaccuracies left and right.
Seemingly feeling the pressure, Dream JB decided to forgo the second video and instead announced on a Twitter account that has also been deleted, that he would instead be releasing the actual software for the jailbreak before 10 p.m. He still had people hooked despite the obviously fake video.
As promised around 9:45 p.m. he released a link on the Dream JB website. After clicking the link however, nothing happened. That's when the user known as Dream JB decided to try covering his tracks, deleting his newly formed YouTube account, his Twitter account and completely changed the home page for the Dream JB website.
"Jailbreakers, what you see may not always be true. Please follow the dev team members for true and meaningful updates in the JB world. Let this be a lesson to all current and future jailbreak fakers," Dream JB said before deleting his Twitter account.
He then tried explaining to the thousands of jailbreak hopefuls that this was all merely a test, to prove how easy it was to fool people who don't know the proper way to download a safe product. He essentially tried claiming he was teaching users a lesson with the whole ruse. Fortunately, not many people believed the scam artist from the beginning.
"Dream JB was intended as a social experiment. In a matter of a mere week, over 20,000 people followed @DreamJailbreak on twitter. The website had over 300,000 unique viewers. People believed in a "jailbreak" that originally provided no proof at all," the user said on his website. "Let this be a lesson to the public. PLEASE be careful when it comes to jailbreak solutions that are advertised outside of the prominent and accepted dev teams. Dismiss any claims made by anybody, unless it has been confirmed from the dev team members. This experiment is exactly as it was named. Simply a dream."
This is just the latest developer claiming to have an untethered jailbreak since the iPhone 5 was released in September as there have been hundreds just like him. The closest anyone has actually been to an untethered jailbreak was in November when Chronic Dev achieved a partial jailbreak. The team hasn't been successful since however, claiming the protections in the iOS system that Apple has set are too hard to break through.
