Over 12 Chrysler assembly-plant workers that were fired back in 2010 after being filmed by a Detroit television station drinking alcohol and smoking during breaks have been rehired by an arbitrator. The United Auto Workers union won their dispute against Chrysler due to the fact that the company "improperly" fired the employees.
The workers were filmed by WJBK, a Fox television station in Detroit during their breaks at a Jefferson North Assembly plant according to Automotive News smoking and drinking alcohol in the company parking lot.
Chrysler fired 13 of the workers shown in the video, which aired Sept. 10, 2010, and then suspended two others for a month without pay. The UAW filed grievances on behalf of the 13 fired workers and according to Automotive News a third-party arbitrator agreed with the union that Chrysler had improperly fired the employees.
"Chrysler Group acknowledges the reinstatement of a number of employees from the Jefferson North assembly plant who were discharged from the company in September 2010 after appearing in a local TV station's story about their off-duty conduct," Chrysler said in a press statement.
Accepting the fact that they had lost the arbitration, Chrysler is now just trying to put the ordeal in the past. The company has confirmed in a press statement that each employee has returned to work, but they did not mention if they will receive compensation for the last two years.
"Unfortunately, the company was put in a very difficult position because of the way the story was investigated and ultimately revealed to the public," said Chrysler in a press statement. "These employees from Jefferson North have been off work for more than two years. The time has come to put this situation behind us and resume our focus on building quality products that will firmly establish Chrysler Group's position in the marketplace."
