Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher reportedly told officers on Saturday who found him sleeping in his car hours before he committed a murder-suicide that he was waiting for a person he described to be his girlfriend to return to her apartment according to a new report by the Associated Press.
Police responded to a call they received around 2:50 a.m. that a man was sleeping in his car outside the apartment building according to the Associated Press. Police spokesman Darin Snapp said that when police arrived and spoke with Belcher, he was very cooperative with their questioning.
"We asked him 'Why are you sleeping here?', and he says he's there to visit his girlfriend, but she's not home," Snapp said according to the Associated Press.
After officers checked and determined Belcher didn't have any outstanding warrants, Belcher made a phone call and minutes later a woman let Belcher into her building. Officers didn't question the woman before Belcher went inside.
"When he was sleeping she may have come home, and he didn't realize," Snapp said reportedly to officers according to the Associated Press. "He was very cooperative and thanked the officers.
This was the last time Belcher was seen by officers until they received a call saying he was involved at a shooting at his home.
The apartment complex was 10 miles away from a home Belcher was sharing with Kasandra Perkins, the mother of his 3-month-old daughter. Belcher shot Perkins at their home on Saturday morning and then drove to the Kansas City Chiefs practice facility's parking lot where he then committed suicide according to a police report.
Nearby witnesses have said Belcher was at his girlfriend's apartment until at least 6:30 a.m. At 7:50 a.m. police were called to Belcher's home and found Perkins dead in the master bathroom with gunshot wounds according to a police report.
Belcher drove five miles to Arrowhead Stadium where he then met with general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel. He thanked both for everything they have done for him during his time with the Chiefs before police arrived. Belcher then hid behind a vehicle out of view from officers Snapp said, knelt down and shot himself in the head.
Investigators now believe that alcohol, money issues and stress between Belcher and Perkins probably played a key role in the murder-suicide. The Kansas City Chiefs had been providing couples counseling for the two according Newsday.
