The Huawei Mate 9 is finally in the United States. It was released on January 6 and is looking to be quite the Galaxy Note 7 killer, not that the Note 7 needs killing off anymore.

The Huawei Mate 9. The Mate 9 appears to be a contender for the title of as the ultimate phablet. It is one durable and high-performance smartphone with really great battery life. In addition, it has impressive rear dual 20-megapixel cameras with f/2.2 aperture lenses and a front 8-megapixel camera f/1.9 aperture lens. This Huawei phablet, which runs on the Huawei Kirin 960 2.4 GHz octa-core processor, looks like it can take down the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and iPhone 7 anytime, any day.

You practically get a combination of the Mate 8 and the P9, specifically the former's big screen and the latter's amazing camera, and no exploding components like the Note 7. Apart from these features, you get it all working on Google's new Android 7.0 Nougat with EMUI 5.0.

One amazing feature of the Mate 9 is that it is Daydream VR ready. However, it is not certain if this phablet has powerful enough hardware to support it given that it does not sport a 2K display unlike the Google Pixel and Samsung's Galaxy S7 Edge.

The Huawei Mate 9's full metal uni-body is impressive but not that exciting. For a high-end phone, it only offers full high-definition display and not QHD. It does, however, have a fingerprint sensor on the back and a USB-C port on the bottom.

Its size is more or less similar in size to the iPhone 7 Plus. It features a 5.9-inch 1920x1080 pixel resolution LCD. Even it is as large as the iPhone 7 Plus, you get more screen on the Mate 9. If one is used to smaller phones, then the Mate 9 is probably not the right choice. Again, it is a phablet.

Price-wise, it is a bit heavy on the wallet than what was expected from the brand. The Mate 9 retails at US$599.

One thing that sets the Mate 9 from other smartphones in the US Market is that it has Amazon's Alexa on it. The Amazon Alexa is a critical success and it only adds to the Mate 9's already strong appeal.
