According to some reports, Nokia, the mobile company who just got back into the market, is planning to throw the gauntlet to LG and Samsung with its very own foldable smartphone in the works. This news is due to the emergence of a patent which suggests Nokia could have a foldable smartphone in the pipeline.

It is interesting that the patent for the foldable device was filed by Nokia Corporation with the USPTO in 2013 and the USPTO granted the same to the company in September 2016, Tech Times reported. Nokia has patent applications for crunder tech for foldable displays from 2005 which means they have been planning the foldable headset for a long time. When it comes to exploring innovation, Nokia belongs to an exclusive group of mobile companies which incorporated the idea of replacing older technological aspects with new ones. This patent doesn’t mean Nokia is preparing the foldable smartphone for sure, it is still highly unlikely since they just got back into the smartphone scene. However, some people think Nokia could be patenting an idea without actually deploying the technology.

According to Phone Arena, the foldable Samsung Galaxy X could come as early as next year. In the meantime, other phone giants Apple and LG are working on their own iterations of the technology. But the idea for a foldable smartphone is far from new for Nokia. However, the latest patent shows a device which looks like a pocket mirror. It has two identical parts connected by a hinge. On the top of that, it has a single flexible display which bends when the two sides of the device are closed. The pocket size device will have a relatively large display of 6, 7 or 8-inch. This device also features a locking mechanism that keeps the two parts together similar to some laptop computers.
