The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 fiasco was the biggest issue in the smartphone industry last year. This resulted in a formal recall of more than one million Note 7 devices in the U.S. alone. Industry observers and consumers expected a permanent demise of the Galaxy Note series including the Galaxy Note 8.
However, many analysts believe that Samsung's next flagship, the Galaxy Note 8, is still in the works. Despite the Note 7 washout, Samsung Electronics remain an investors' darling. The company's shares hit a record high last December.
While the Note 7 battery issue created a serious dent in Samsung's finances, industry analysts insist the fiasco will be under the bridge by mid-2017. Samsung managed the fiasco well and came out not badly affected at all. The South Korean tech giant's 2016 fourth-quarter profit is a big slap on skeptics.
Samsung Electronics' better than expected performance during the quarter surprised many. The Note 7 brouhaha peaked during this period when it caused damage and injuries worldwide. A financially strong Samsung means more products in development including the Note 8, which might be released in the third quarter this year.
According to SamMobile, the Galaxy Note 8 will have a 4K AMOLED display to support VR function. This feature will give Samsung an advantage over the overhauled OLED iPhone 8. However, the Note 8 is also speculated to have a digital assistant named 'Bixy', which will debut in the Galaxy S8 next month.
Another certain feature of the Note 8 is USB Type-C, a connection tech included in the Galaxy Note 7. The niche technology is compatible with the Samsung's proprietary virtual reality system Galaxy Gear VR. The Note 7 will also have an Iris scanner, expandable storage up to 256GB, and dual-edge curved screen.
