Hopefully by now if you live in one of the many states that will be affected by Hurricane Sandy you have taken the necessary precautions to prepare your home and family members in case of an emergency or if the power goes out.

If you have yet to prepare for Hurricane Sandy, here is a checklist of things you should consider doing and purchasing before the Hurricane affects your state.

What To Do Before The Hurricane Hits:

           -Reinforce garage doors

-Board up windows and doors with plywood and tape

-Plug in cell phones, laptops, and other electronic devices to make sure they have a full charge

-Find all available flashlights and put new batteries in them

           -Don't buy frozen groceries

-Bring in items from outside that could blow away from high winds

           -Clear Gutters

-Have a plan for your pets, whether you will be taking them with you if evacuation is needed or

bringing them somewhere that will have power during the hurricane

-Go over an evacuation plan with all members of the house

-Store vital documents such as birth certificates, social security cards inside somewhere where

            they won't get damaged

Supplies To Have:

-Three to four days worth of water

-Purchase flashlights or lanterns if you currently can't find any

          -First aid kit

-Paper or plastic cups, plates, utensils

-Extra set of house keys for each member of the house

-Printed contact information for each member of the house

          -Fire extinguisher

-Pack suitcases or traveling bags with clothes in case you need to leave your house quick

-Fill up all cars with gas as soon as possible

-Take out cashin casebusinesses can't accept credit/debit cards

-Fill a cooler with ice to store important items that need to be kept cold

-Food that doesn't need to be refrigerated or cooked such as canned goods and dry cereal

Things To Do and Not To Do If The Power Goes Out:

-Un-plug all electronic devices before leaving your home

-Drive only when necessary, avoid all roads that could have flooding

        -Don't use candles

-Listen to NOAA or local radio stations on a battery powered radio for the latest news on

         the hurricane

-Download apps for your phone in case of emergency or to keep you updated on the location of the

         storm

-Don't go near or touch loose power lines. Report them immediately, never assume someone else

         has already

-Check refrigerated items every couple of hours, if it looks spoiled then throw it out

-Go to the movies or locations that have power to pass the time

-Save cell-phone battery power for emergency calls only

-Order takeout or go to restaurants that have power for food

-If forced to evacuate, return home only once it is safe

Hurricane Sandy is expected to knock out the power in many locations as early as 5 p.m. on Monday.
