The BMW Group has been named the world's most sustainable automotive company for the eighth consecutive year in the ranking published today by the SAM Group for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). Among the three automotive industry enterprises listed each year, the BMW Group is the only one to feature in the renowned index every year for the past 14 years.
"We strongly believe that sustainability is a key factor in the long-term economic success of the BMW Group. For that reason, we are delighted to be recognised once again by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. We are proud to be the sector leader in this important ranking for the eighth consecutive year- at the same time, it motivates us to continue to be a pioneer in corporate sustainability in the future," said Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
Sustainability is firmly embedded in the BMW Group's culture and corporate strategy. In 2001, the BMW Group committed itself to the United Nations Environment Programme, the UN Global Compact and the Cleaner Production Declaration. It was also the first company in the automotive industry to appoint an environmental officer back in 1973.
The Sustainability Board, comprising all members of the Board of Management, defines the strategic alignment through binding targets.
The positive rating in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index marks the second occasion in a week that the company has been recognised for its commitment to sustainability.
The BMW Group was also listed in the Global 500 Leadership Index published yesterday by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), achieving its all-time best score. With 99 of 100 possible points, the BMW Group is not only sector leader but is also among the top three companies from all sectors worldwide.
