2017 Toyota Camry Hybrid: How Close Is Its Performance To The Tesla Model S?

Nov 01, 2016 08:50 AM EDT | Johanna Vanessa Anasco

The 2018 Toyota Camry was recently spotted during a test. It was reported that it now sports a sleeker-angled exterior. It also sports a trend apparent with a new edition of sedans, with slimmer headlights.

Just like the 2016 model, the 2017 Camry Hybrid didn't impress a lot. It was seen as the same old edition. The only difference was the year it was released. It no longer carries the awkwardly designed exteriors. The grill sort of has a triangular style. The 2018 Toyota Camry prototype got multi-spoke mag wheels. It's silhouette more angular than its proceeding model.

The headlights appear to be LEDs. There is a slim spoiler at the back with quad-exhaust tips. This hints a sporty look for the hybrid sedan, according to Autoblog.

The engine has sort of a downgrade. It was rumored to be having a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged cylinder. It will also carry an eight-speed automatic transmission. This was an upgrade from being a previous six-speedster. There were reports that the 2018 Toyota Camry will have aluminum parts. That would then make the hybrid sedan relatively lighter.

How does it fare against the Tesla Model S?

Data for the 2018 Camry hybrid is yet to be announced. However, the 2017 edition has an output of 178 hp. The Tesla Model 2, on the other hand, has a 532 hp output. The vehicle has EPA ratings of 43 mpg in city, 39 mpg on the highway and on average at 41 mpg. No data available for EVs in this aspect. As the Tesla Model S is fully electric.

The 2017 Toyota Camry can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.6 seconds. The Tesla Model S is far ahead by being able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just less than three seconds. The 2017 Camry hybrid's engine is mated to a 6-speed CVT transmission system. There is aa 6-speed manual gearbox available as well. On the other hand, The Tesla Model S's gearbox can be set to drive, neutral, reverse and park.

It is clear the Tesla Model S is far ahead of the Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Tesla Model S rival is yet to be created.
