The third season of Formula E, the racing category of electric cars that has attracted attention around the world, began on Sunday in the streets of Hong Kong. It was an action-packed race where Swiss racer Sebastian Buemi took home the victory before 35,000 spectators in the 1.8 kilometers track.

Action Packed Race

Entertaining as the first two, the Formula E saw a lot of action last weekend. Defending champion Sebastian Buemi took advantage of an incident that disrupted the Brazilian Nelsinho Piquet runner-up and won the race. Another Brazilian, Lucas Di Grassi, was second and German racer Nick Heidfeld completed the podium.

Runner-up, Nelsinho had everything to achieve a good result. He led with English Olivier Turvey, his partner in the China team in the second position. It was when the Argentine Jose Maria Lopez, knocked off a chicane. Being a street circuit, the track is narrow and when he made the turn, the unfortunate accident happened and Nelsinho had no choice but to throw his car under another direction and stopped.

There was no major breakdown, but the safety car entered the track and everyone went to the pits. The Nelsinho team took to call him and when they did, the Brazilian return to the race but went at end of the pack, making the fight for the top position harder than ever.

Standout Racers

Lucas Di Grassi did well in strategy. He has a bad luck at the start when he hit the Chinese Ma Qinghua, which in turn had hit Nico Prost. The Brazilian had to fix the front, broken wing and went to the end of the line. But when changing the car, as soon as the safety car came out, he ended up taking the lead.

When there was still some cars in front stop, Di Grassi was overtaken by Buemi of team Renault, who took the victory. The Brazilian of the team ABT Audi, came in second, with only a two-second differential. Heidfeld and Prost also completed less than 10 seconds away from the winner. Piquet finished only in 11th place, while Andretti put the Portuguese Antonio Felix da Costa in fifth and Dutchman Robin Frijns sixth. Maro Engel Venturi, was the only rookie driver to score points and did amazingly too.

The next stage of Formula E will be a month from now, on 12 November in Marrakesh, Morocco. Then it will be back in 2017, in Buenos Aires.
