Nissan LEAF is facing a lot of hurdles and it is it not spared regarding the issue pertaining to the non-deployment of airbags. Also, with the massive recall, the profits, revenues and dominance is anticipated to lag behind Tesla even more.

A report published by Inside EVs revealed of the global scaled recall that has affected all segments including the prestigious Nissan LEAF. The report mentioned that there were 3.5 million vehicles as well as Nissan LEAFs that has to be recalled from segments distributed in 2013 up to 2016 Model Year Nissan LEAFs.

According to Nissan official statement, "The front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash."

More report from Car And Driver also exposed that it is not only the Nissan LEAF models that need to be recalled but also other segments such as Infiniti models and the 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima.

On the other hand, it stands out that this is not the first time that recalls were given because it is already the third recall being rendered. According to the same post, as of March 2014, Nissan has already added more recall that has amounted to 989,701 recalled cars.

Nissan has noted of the "unusual seating posture" and engine vibrations as one of the underlying cause of the OCS failing to distinguish seated passengers. However, even though calibrations have been implemented, some owners are still are citing instances of illuminated passenger airbag that lights on the dash. The lighted feature indicates that the airbag has been set to deactivated mode.

The recall has undeniably tarnished Nissan's segments and its frontrunner Nissan LEAF. Also, the recall brings forth uncertainty, it remains unsettled on how far the recall has affected Nissan LEAF and how far it has lagged behind Tesla's EV segments as well.
