A Honda Civic Type-R Surprises the Crowd in New York

Apr 10, 2015 01:00 AM EDT | Jeff Jablansky

The vehicle you see above is the Honda Civic Concept, a preview of the 10th-generation model that's supposedly not too far off, and it was shown to a mouths-agape crowd at the New York auto show. The New Energy Green coupe was undoubtedly one of the greatest surprises of the show.

Bigger than the news about the arrival of a new Civic was a different announcement: Honda will bring the hot, heretofore forbidden Civic Type-R along with it.

The news came straight from John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, whose teleprompted remarks made it clear that this announcement wasn't ad-libbed. The Civic Type-R is the ultimate expression of the civic, like the Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R are to their respective brands' nameplates, and we have reason to expect great things from it.

While it may take several years for the Civic Type-R to reach U.S. showrooms—the garden-variety Civic is due soon—we'll be waiting for it.
