Google might be looking to move into the U.S. auto insurance market with a shopping site for people to compare and purchase polices.
The popular internet search giant is supposedly preparing to release a new Google Compare auto insurance comparison shopping website sometime in the near future, according to a note written by Forrester analyst Ellen Carney.
Carney said the company, which has shifted its attention to the auto industry lately, has been pitching the service to insurance providers for at least two years now.
Google has declined to comment on the news so far.
The Mountain View-based company currently offers a service in the UK for users to compare more than 125 auto insurance options. The company takes a cut once a user purchases insurance either online or over the phone.
Industry analysts say Google has been looking into online searches created toward specific industries or markets. Google already offers sites that compare travel destinations and find cheap flight fares, for example.
Recently, Google has started adventuring past its home turf of advertising and internet search to extend its dominance to fields like self-driving vehicles and different kinds of robotics.
Carney believes that the pilot for the new service will begin sometime during the first quarter of this year, according to her note.
"As late as last month the site was expected to launch in California, to be followed in Q1 2015 with likely launches in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Texas," Carney said in her note. "Last I heard was that California pilot wouldn't begin until sometime in Q1."
Google is licensed to sell auto insurance in 26 states and is already working with a number of different companies, like MetLife and Dairyland. A Google employee is also licensed to sell insurance on behalf of CoverHound, a San Francisco-based company that pulls insurance options from the biggest carries available.
