Toyota has released a teaser image of the redesigned 2016 Tacoma midsize pickup, which is slated to launch at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show.

The photo doesn't give away much, just showing the rear of the pickup splashing through mud, but Toyota has promised new adventure and big improvements for the revamped Tacoma.

"Backed by a heritage of unwavering capability, an unbreakable attitude and new, rugged tech, Tacoma's off-road prowess is more formidable than ever," the automaker said. "This is how we make America's best-selling midsize pickup for the last 10 years [based on industry data as of November] better in every way."

The all-new version of Toyota's Tacoma pickup truck, which will reportedly launch at the North American International Auto Show in January, is expected to spur competition in the midsize segment.

Toyota sold 140,747 Tacomas in the first 11 months of the year, constituting 66 percent of all compact pickup sales, according to Automotive News.

General Motors recently returned to the segment with the Chevrolet Colorado after a two-year break, taking Motor Trend's Truck of the Year award. Ford's Transit full-size commercial van came in second place, while the newly aluminum-bodied and much-touted F-150 pickup took the No. 3 spot.
