The 2018 Toyota Camry is reportedly coming out with a state-of-the-art infotainment system. Apparently, the new system runs on a Linux-based, open-source technology platform that was created by hundreds of engineers.
This new Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) infotainment system will be another milestone in the auto industry. It aims to be a trendsetter in the infotainment system for connected cars. The new infotainment platform will enable automakers to customize the system to meet their preferred purposes.
The 2018 Toyota Camry will be the first model from the brand to use the new infotainment platform. The new system will enable users in using features like navigation and music.
Kenichi Murata, a Toyota group manager of Connected Strategy and Planning, told Reuters that the new infotainment on the new Camry comprises of mostly generic coding, which is about 70 percent. Whereas, 30 percent consists of the customized aspects of the new model.
Toyota will not be an exclusive beneficiary of this outstanding platform. Many other brands are reportedly going to use the new open-source platform. Mazda, Daimler and Suzuki have been listed as among the 10 brands who are currently developing the platform with tech companies and suppliers.
Dan Cauchy, the general manager of automotive at the Linux Foundation, details that the new AGL empowers the automakers to gain control over individualizing the platforms. Cauchy also brags that "A lot of automakers want that control."
With the new AGL, Toyota can save on the cost of the new infotainment system. Since other brands are also sharing in the development of the new system, the time and costing will be significantly reduced.
The new AGL will be available for the 2018 Toyota Camry later this summer. It remains to be seen how this latest technology feature will work out with the new sedan. Reports say this is such an aggressive effort on the part of Toyota.
